چکیده

Research and development in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have made remarkable progress since the advent of the first electrostatic micromotor in 1987. Considerable efforts have been directed to the investigation of the failure mechanisms and reliability of electrostatic micromotors. This paper provides a brief overview of failure modes and mechanisms and solving methods in electrostatic micromotors that are commonly met. It focuses on the introduction of the failure modes and mechanisms with numerical and experimental methods as well as the recent methods for reducing the failures and the development in future. In addition, the paper illustrates our investigation on the contact dynamics between the rotor and bearing hub and the effects of gas-lubricated bearing which decrease the possibility of friction, contact, and wear in electrostatic micromotors. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. VHDL–AMS modelling and simulation of a planar electrostatic micromotor

System level simulation results of a planar electrostatic micromotor, based on analytical models of the static and dynamic torque behaviours, are presented. A planar variable capacitance (VC) electrostatic micromotor designed, fabricated and tested at LAAS (Toulouse) in 1995 is simulated using the high level language VHDL–AMS (VHSIC (very high speed integrated circuits) hardware description lan...

Vector Shape Optimization of an Electrostatic Micromotor Using a Genetic Algorithm

The automated shape optimization of an electrostatic micromotor with radial field is tackled. Two objectives in mutual contrast i.e. static torque and torque ripple, depending on two design variables, are considered. An innovative procedure for vector optimization which aims at obtaining as many optimal solutions as possible, is presented. To this end, a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm ...

Microball - bearing - supported electrostatic micromachines with polymer dielectric films for electromechanical power conversion

This paper presents our latest research activities toward the development of electrostatic micromotors/microgenerators with a microball-bearing support mechanism and benzocyclobutene (BCB) low-k polymer insulating layers. The primary applications of these devices are long-range, high-speed micropositioning, high-speed micro pumping and micro power generation. In this paper, we present the devel...

Dynamic characterization of a linear electrostatic micromotor supported on microball bearings

We report the dynamic characterization of a six-phase, bottom-drive, linear, variable-capacitance micromotor (B-LVCM) supported on microball earings. The B-LVCM was fabricated and tested using a new test-bed. The motion of the micromotor was captured using lowand high-speed ideo cameras, tracked using image processing software, and analyzed to obtain the instantaneous velocity (11 mm/s), accele...
